Our History… Wichita’s Tradition

Wichitans Delmar & Rose Kuhlman and Jim & Susan Galvin opened Scotch & Sirloin at East Kellogg & Bluff in November of 1968 with aspirations to make the restaurant a Wichita icon, and that they did. After developing a loyal following, the restaurant was sold to Glenn Rupe in 1974 and then later sold to Ernie & Laurie Doyon. The Doyons upheld the traditions and history, owning the restaurant for more than a decade. In 1987, Ernie Doyon approached Lindy Andeel and insisted that Andeel buy Scotch & Sirloin. Andeel reluctantly agreed to make the purchase. Later, Doug Farha and Sonny Glennon became partners and Sonny became General Manager.

Knowing that the highway construction would ultimately cause the original building to be torn down, plans were made to purchase additional land one mile east on Kellogg to the present location which is three times larger than the original Scotch & Sirloin Building. A grand re-opening in January of 1997 celebrated the new location.

For decades Scotch & Sirloin has been a favorite destination for business deals, special occasions and other memorable milestones. While the signature dish remains the Prime Rib and is ordered thousands of times weekly, the seafood and poultry dishes have become equally popular. At day’s end, more than 75% of the sales are generated by its Sterling Silver Premium Beef.

Scotch & Sirloin is where the steak lovers come together to enjoy a meal. Scotch General Manager Sonny Glennon says, “We have a regular following of steak aficionados, and to entertain their business guests, they bring them here.”

As general manager for more than 20 years, Glennon can attest that today’s Scotch honors the same tradition of hospitality that was created in 1968.

To ensure its exclusive premium choice hand-trimmed Sterling Silver beef and 30-day aging, the Scotch opened S&S Meats in 1998 under management of long-time butcher Bill Buetow. Its location, across the parking lot, offers guests the opportunity to purchase Scotch & Sirloin quality meats. Glennon says, “Without the Sterling Silver Premium Beef program, we’d be just another steak house.” S&S Meats serves as a meat market for the public and also a place where the beef is aged and is hand-trimmed to perfection for the restaurant and the market’s meat cases.

Scotch & Sirloin is a four-time winner of the Beef Backer Award from the Kansas Beef Council in: 1989, 1994, 1998, and 2003. The award is presented according to the restaurant’s exhibition of leadership of beef menuing, actively marketing and promoting beef to the consumer and evidence that beef is the dominant item on menu. The Scotch also ensures that the wait staff is knowledgeable about the beef and its flavors.

With decades of history and its tradition of hospitality, guests from around the world have deemed the Scotch & Sirloin a Wichita icon.
