Instead of a memory, I would like to mention a special few.

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

To be a part of the Scotch & Sirloin is to be a part of greatness. As a server and manager at the Scotch I was privileged to surrounded with so many gifted people. Instead of a memory, I would like to mention a special few.
To David Borrow and his talented kitchen staff, thank you for always ensuring we served the very best. To serve from your kitchen was a privilege..
Mrs. Linda Taylor, who shared her kindness, compassion and an eye for every detail with me. You make the Scotch a beautiful place to be.
Rene Epperson, thank you for sharing your endless knowledge of hospitality. Thank you for knowing everyone’s name, where they are from, who they are married to and when they where born. Thank you for being my friend and for always hearing me out .
Sonny Glennon, you taught me that knowledge is power, always keep my head up and that under pressure great strength and success is born.
Lindy Andeal, you taught me to assume nothing, to never be satisfied and to keep searching and striving for perfection.
To the customers that made everyday an adventure, thank you for sharing your lives with us at the Scotch. You gave me the best job in the world!!! To the great customers that have left us, to Big Dan, Gary Reams, John Arnold and so many others that left their footprints at the Scotch, we miss you.
And last but not least, to all the past and future Scotch Girl’s who are the image of the Scotches great success, you are a part of a sisterhood of strong and talented women. I am so proud to have been a part of you.

75th birthday Celebration

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

We recently celebrated our mother’s 75th birthday at the Scotch & Sirloin. We were warmly greeted by a gentleman in the lobby and the initial visit was personalized when he commented and remembered our occassion. We were immediately seated in a nostalgic half circle booth which was very comfortable. The Scotch & Sirloin has an appetizing menu including steak and seafood. It is so refreshing to visit a restaurant where you don’t have to worry about the food and service. What you can focus on is enjoying the evening with your friends and family and they take care of everything else. Our server even complimented our birthday celebration with a slice of cake and photo of us and the guest of honor. Congratulations and Thank you for your 40 years of service and please carry on the tradition for another 40 years.

One great memory is nearly impossible

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

When you work at the Scotch for 10 years (at both locations) trying to pinpoint just one great memory is nearly impossible! All I can say is a lot of great memories of not only the staff but the guests! Waiting on and meeting famous folks such as William Hurt, bowling great Earl Anthony, my childhood idol Donny Osmond and of course my personal favorite Kevin Costner to name a few was a thrill, but the friendships I made during my 10 years there go way beyond that and have even helped me in my current career. I had all 3 of my children while working there and they always managed to find a place for me when my belly got too big! Happy 40th Anniversary Sonny, Lindy, Linda, Renee, Dave and all the gang…you truly are a Wichita tradition!!

I think what I look forward to everyday is the kitchen talk with the girls… Always something funny…. I love our customers and its great how we can interact with them and really get to know them…. Hope to see you soon

Where the bonds with some of my best friends were born

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

I always looked forward to Halloween at the Scotch. When I have a bad day, I will remember some of those costumes and it always puts a smile on my face. There was Sonny as “Hef”; Greg as Sonny; Joy as Tucan Sam; Heidi as “Heidi”; and of course, Anita every year in her ballcap and jersey (predictable and hilarious!).

My best memories are of the friendships I made, the family I became a part of, and the laughs that kept me strong in the darkest of times. I loved working lunches and would look forward to Sonny’s wild and crazy stories of his younger days, and the girls with our morning bathroom gab-fests, and finding Calvin taking naps in the banquet room. At nights, rolling silverware, I learned a LOT about my girls and then we would continue on to “next door” (RIP Cafe…) where the bonds with some of my best friends were born.

Thank you Scotch & Sirloin for giving my life such color, excitement, and support; I came to you a young and silly girl, and left a better and more confident lady.

How late we could keep Sonny at the “office”.

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

It’s a toss up on the favorite part as to whether it was helping the closing staff (late 90’s) with ROLLING SILVERWARE (how many forks again) on those late nights (early morning) OR the night of the Big Flood (1999?). For some reason, Sonny was there late (yes, I said Sonny) and it started to rain and didn’t stop. Water was at least two feet deep in the parking lot and pouring down, when Joy (with the help of Greg) went out to move her car. Car wouldn’t start, so they pushed it. Joy had on shorts and a thin white t-shirt. When she came back in, it appeared to be really cold out too! :) It was late and there were a dozen or so of us stuck there, so Sonny shocked us and reopened the bar till about ?, let’s say late. Some lady had a baby in a boat right out front with the fire department helping and the look on Sonny’s face was priceless when he discovered that I had driven my lifted Surburban and we could have left hours ago, but it was worth seeing how late we could keep Sonny at the “office”.

End of a tragedy, with a new beginning over lunch at the Scotch

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Forty one years ago, my entire family was on the receiving end of a tragedy that ended with a new beginning and it happened partly over lunch and drinks at Scotch & Sirloin. My youngest brother was killed in Viet Nam in 1968 by “friendly fire.” It was a year after I returned from there serving with the United States Marine Corps. For over 35 years we knew very little about what happened. One day out of the blue, a letter came to my folks’ home, which we lived in, by chance. Dad had passed away and mom had Alztheimers. It was from Florida, from the man who accidentally shot my brother. He had suffered horribly all those years. Part of his getting better was to come meet us and answer questions, if we would allow it. At first, we were conflicted but then offered our chance to give him his life back. He is a very nice guy with a loving, caring wife and 2 grown children. We visited the War Memorial and went to the cemetery where my brother is buried. After a lot of emotion was released over several days, we concluded their visit with lunch & drinks at Scotch & Sirloin. It seemed like the appropriate place. Thank you!

My first glass of wine for my 21st

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

In 1970 on my 21st birthday, I decided to celebrate at Scotch and Sirloin. We had known Sonny for many years of celebrating at Tom & Sonny’s. Our waitress, Judy Govern, had been a friend for awhile too. I drank my first glass of wine there (Mateus Rose’) and enjoyed a truly superb dinner. Thanks for the memory!

So Great they cleared the dance floor

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Many years ago when the Scotch and Sirloin was st Kellogg and Bluff, you had not only good food, but a small dance floor with a small band. My wife, Patricia Wittman Bayles and her brother Scott Wittman were dancing to the music. They attracted so much attention that the other dancers cleared the floor. Patricia’s brother, Scott and his partner, Marc Shaiman have written scores for several movies starring Bette Midler, Raquel Welch, Billy Crystal and others. One of my favorite movies they did was Sleepless in Seattle. Scott is an excellent dancer and my wife was able to keep up with the performance in that small venue. Scott has done choreography for films and Broadway shows. Scott and Marc are now working on another Broadway show, Catch Me If You Can.

The crowning achievement, so far for Scott and Marc was the Broadway show and film, Hairspray, which won a Tony award. We are very proud of Scott and his achievements and were very pleased with his performance at the Scotch and Sirloin.

Joseph Bayles, Scott’s brother-in-law
